Fascination with body mechanics

I have always been fascinated by the machine that our body is and interested in learning how best to use and develop it. Because of this I practiced many different kinds of sports. At eight years old I started Martial Arts, studying hap-ki-do under master Ki C.Yoon in Calgary, eventually reaching a 4th Dan black belt. At twelve years old I started dance lessons and I was dancing professionally by age 14. In my teens I added gymnastics, and in my twenties I studied Thai Massage and entertained myself and my friends with parcour. My passions for fitness and bodybuilding however have always been a constant in my life that supported all other physical adventures I embarked upon.

Life altering accident

I started touring the world as a professional drummer at age 19, traveling all over North America, Europe and Asia. During my time in Asia I choreographed fights for movies, and starred in them as an actor doing my own stunts. Unfortunately one of these stunts went horribly wrong when I was 31. As a result I shattered many bones in my right leg and ankle. 

Becoming a personal trainer

After a few reconstructive surgeries that helped me keep my leg I was humbled by chronic pain and mitigated use of my right leg. Through this experience I have been forced to find methods to work around the injury, which in turn has given me much more insight into helping others with limitations to recover or work around a chronic condition. I found a new passion in this, and was officially certified as a personal trainer in 2014. Since then I have regularly improved my skill set with additional courses and certifications.

Helping others in pain

So far I have had a great success in taking people with injuries and showing them how to be fit despite them, or even correcting the injury.  I have helped people with back pain, plantar fasciitisrotator cuff injuriesshoulder mobility issues and many other issues. I have also helped clients get ready for and recover from joint replacements, resulting in a faster return to everyday life.

My favorite part of my job is the reward of helping people in pain lead better lives.

Move to my own private gym

In 2020 I completely renovated a large space in my home and opened my own home gym. I can offer clients a calm and private environment where we can really focus on the movements and the work that needs to be done. It is fully equipped with anything we might need during a session and gets fully sanitized between each client.

As a young person I sustained whiplash from a car accident and then several other neck injuries that resulted in chronic pain. I am not a weightlifter, never have been. My enduring sport involvement, besides yoga, generally involves racquets or clubs, squash, tennis, pickleball and golf. Historically my body has supported my endeavors very well. However, as I am getting closer to 70 and as I have read about what exercises seniors should consider, I thought about weight lifting. Rob’s class was recommended and after my first class I have never looked back. I am not trying to build a Charles Atlas body but just to tone the one I have. Robbin is personable, enthusiastic and willing to listen to specific issues. He gives exceptionally detailed and illustrated explanations of why we are doing specific weight lifting or stretching routines. I am an engineer; I like to know the specifics as to how each exercise is to be set-up and performed. Robbin considers every question as relevant. I believe it is never too late to start weight lifting and stretching. Ask for Robbin’s guidance or experiment on your own as to the amount of weight to use during his class. Sitting in the office all day long and riding the bicycle pretty much every day (6000 km plus /year) brought me serious lower back problems after my 40th birthday. MRI, physio, acupuncture and medications followed afterwards. My family doctor mentioned back surgery, my physiotherapist mentioned gym and core strengthening. Who wants to have a back surgery in his forties? Of course I picked up the gym and personal trainer.
